Shiing-shen Chern, born in Jiaxing Zhejiang on Oct. 26 1911, is a world-class mathematician. His outstanding contribution to global differential geometry impacted the general development of mathematics. Therefore, Chen-Ning Franklin Yang, a Chinese-born American as well as a Nobel Prize Winner in Physics highly considered him as another landmark figure after Euclid, Gauss, Riemann and Cartan. He returned to his hometown, Jiaxing, in his later life and exerted his utmost efforts to train young mathematicians for the realization of his dream: to turn China into a mathematical power in the 21st century. He was requested to become the first honorary president on Oct. 4, 2000. And in 2004 he proposed and personally prepared a calligraphy of JXU’s Motto “Act with Integrity and Probity, Pursue Academics Industriously and Rigorously ”, which has become a valuable treasure for JXU. In addition, the Chinese name of JXU seen on the Home Page is also his calligraphy. In honor of his generosity, consideration and guidance for the future development of the university, JXU set a statue for the first honorary president Shiing-shen Chern in 2006 and named a series of academic events “Shiing-shen” Lecture.
